What is Nutri-eSTEP?

  • Internet adaptations, in English and French, of the NutriSTEP® questionnaires are located on the Dietitians of Canada (DC) website as part of a broader web tool that provides immediate feedback to users, as well as links to relevant resources.
  • STEP 1: General demographic information is collected including: age and gender of the child; relationship to the child; province; and, postal code.
  • STEP 2: The 17 NutriSTEP® questions are presented on individual screens; "Need Help" buttons provide additional information about each question.
  • After completing all 17 questions, the users can review their responses to the questions.
  • STEP 3: Users receive immediate feedback. The feedback messages for each question are categorized into "What is Going Well" and "What to Work On", depending on the response to the question. Each question has a succinct Feedback message, as well as a Learn More button to read additional details and healthy eating tips.
  • There are no scores provided to the user for individual questions or a total score.
  • Users can print and/or email Results and Feedback messages for themselves. They are not able to access their Results after they leave the site.
  • STEP 4: Links to credible nutrition articles, tools and community services are provided.
  • A short evaluation questionnaire for users to complete is at the end to provide feedback on the Nutri-eSTEP tool.
  • Scores and risk cut-off points are not displayed for user, nor provided on their Results.
  • Nutri-eSTEP tool has undergone reliability testing with parents
  • Parents have provided guidance on web design, functionality and content.
  • Funding is from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and DC.

How will the data collected from Nutri-eSTEP be used?

  • Currently the data collected by Dietitians of Canada (DC) are aggregate data on user responses and are for use of DC and the NutriSTEP® research team for generating reports and for research.
  • Discussions are underway in 2015 to find the resources to support obtaining the required permissions and defining the data reporting templates that will be valuable for provincial governments, as well as local public health units.

  • The preschool NutriSTEP® questions are the copyright of the Sudbury & District Health Unit, Heather Keller and Janis Randall Simpson.
  • The toddler NutriSTEP® questions are the copyright of Lee Rysdale, Heather Keller and Janis Randall Simpson.
  • Licence to use the NutriSTEP® questionnaires can be obtained at: www.Flintbox.com. The NutriSTEP® questions must not be copied, adapted, modified or translated without the permission of the copyright owners.
